Huda Beauty Textured Shadows Palette – honest review

I don’t think that Huda Kattan needs introduction to the online beauty community, but if you haven’t heard of her you better check her YouTube channel for some really funny, yet very useful makeup videos. I absolutely love her tutorials and adore watching her videos, she’s just an adorable person. She’s one of the most popular makeup artists on YouTube, that started her own makeup brand. I believe she started with eyelashes, that were hugely popular, than lip products and a palette now. There was a great tension and a waiting list for that palette and it was launched in Dubai (where she lives) first in Sephora and then in other countries.

I was in search of an Autumn palette that would contain some gorgeous reds, that are so popular this season. I was actually trying to buy Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette, which was out of stock at a time, when I happened to see a video on Huda’s channel that was announcing her palette. It wasn’t easy to get it. In fact, I had to subscribe on cultbeauty.com to a waiting list and I thought that I’d probably be too late for buying it anyways. A few weeks later I was actually at home when email popped that this palette is available now, so I bought it straight away. Few hours after that, it was already sold out. I believe more stock is available now.

This palette has a mixture of reviews online, from a real rave to a great disappointment. If you’re considering buying it I would advise to watch Huda’s tutorial first. She does say there, that the most beautiful, textured shadows are meant to be applied with fingers not brushes, as it’s a pure pigment packed in form of a shadow, so it’s consistency isn’t the easiest to work with. But if you follow advise and use fingers it’s one of the most beautiful looks. The palette contains 6 textured (foiled) shadows, 2 shiny, pearl shadows and 10 matte shadows.

Textured shadows: Dubai, Fling, 24K, Rose Gold, Trust Fund, #Blessed

Pearl shadows: Angelic and Moon Dust

Matte shadows: Bossy, Flamingo, Shy, Bae, Black Truffle, Suede, Coco, Maneater, Henna, Sandalwood

As Huda mentioned in her own video, it might take time to get used to it, but when you do you’ll love it. And that was true to me. It took me a while to master my technique of applying textured shadow, but I really love it now. Don’t even try to use a brush, as it doesn’t work, using fingers is the best way. I usually just pat it on my eyelids and build up as much of a layer as I want for my look. For me the six textured shadows are not equal and I find Rose Gold and Trust Fund the most tricky to apply, when others go on very smoothly. But that’s fine, just needs a bit of practice. Both pearl shadows are perfect and very soft. Matte shadows are not equal too. I was having quite a lot of fall outs at the beginning, so I had to go back with a concealer in my under eye area to even it out. Now I got used to working with them and it doesn’t happen. To me the shades are very well pigmented and I have to make sure, that I use tiny amounts, but that’s actually a good thing.

I did swatches of each row separate, starting from left to right:

The packaging is quite cheap. It’s cardboard with removable sleeve (with gorgeous Huda’s eyes on) and with a see-through front cover. It doesn’t bother me on a daily basis, but it will be an issue for travelling. Personally it’s not a big problem for me. I do enjoy if my products have beautiful packaging, but I much prefer to compromise on that, than on the quality of shadows. I’m aware that for £56 we could expect better packaging, but on the other hand I feel like this palette is quite unique with a selection of shades and variety of textures. I love every shade in that palette and I feel like it’s a great Autumn/Winter selection. Anybody who likes warm tones in their makeup won’t be disappointed. I accept the weak points of that palette, like crapy packaging, but overall I feel like it’s my money really well spend and I love and enjoy it every day since I bought it.

Overall I really enjoy that palette. I highly recommend if you’re into this type of colours, as it’s mostly reds and warm tones. I have a great fun creating variety of makeup looks with it and I admire Huda for creating it and for following her dreams.

Thank you for such an honest and beautiful review! The palette is absolutely gorgeous and I find it very unique with a mixture of textured, matte and satin shades. I can’t think of another palette out there quite like it. The cardboard packaging seems to be a go to nowadays, don’t understand why, perhaps the price, Anastasia palettes have a similar packaging. I thought it would be an issue for traveling, but if you lay them flat in your makeup case, then they hold up pretty well. I also saw on Instagram a makeup look you created using this palette and I have to say the shades look absolutely stunning on you!

Thank you Cat, I suppose I just have to be very gentle with it when traveling. The textured shadows in here are winners for me. xx

I was go going to order this when it was in stock but hesitated due the price and it being ‘cardboard’ as you say also, as I do travel a lot and this let it down I think. The glitters are stunning and I still drool looking at your pictures but I just don’t know.
    Great review 😉 Kelly xx

Hi Kelly, I was actually trying to buy Anastasia Madern Renaissance at a time but it was out of stock. I’m very pleased with my choice as textured shadows are my faves. I also wanted a palette with some red tones in. For the last few weeks I’ve been using it nearly every day xx

Thank you for your insightful thoughts. I do agree foils are best applied with fingers, but I’m surprised to see the quality varied across the shades. And at that price point, I really wished it wasn’t carton packaging. I live in a really humid country where nothing lasts, and it will be a pity cos this palette looks so gorgeous!!
